Old Mac Troubleshooting

Yes - OS X is better, save all your pennies, twist every arm and upgrade.

BUT... if you'r stuck, try these

1. You should run Disk First Aid regularly to keep the directory that keeps track of your file names and locations clean. If you haven't and can, do it.
2. Disable EXTENSIONS. Restart with the SHIFT key down. If your Mac is OK, then you need to manually remove files from the extensions folder on old (like systme 6, 7 Macs) or run the Extension Manager under the Apple menu on newer Macs and choose just Apple extensiosn and see what the conflict is.
3. Reset PRAM. Restart with the Command-Option(ALT)-P-R keys, (yes, ALL 4) held down at once. This resets the CMOS settings of the hardware configuration of your Mac. It will re-discover everything and install it correctly as it restarts.
4. Start up the computer from a CD that contains Disk Tools, the original System or a utility by inserting the CD FIRST, choosing restart and immediately holding down the C key as you reboot.
5. Run DISK TOOLS. Choose to fix the drive.
6. Run HDSC setup, Internal HD Format, OR Drive setup (depending on how old your Mac is) and UPDATE the HD driver.
7. Try another older utility BUT make sure it's the version made for your operating system. I like Disk Warrior and Tech Tools.
8. Start up the computer from a CD of, the original System and do a CLEAN INSTALL. That will save your old System folder and applications, maybe you can save some stuff
