2006 Sociology Syllabus

This course is divided into four roughly two week units. These units will explore aspects in and of societies The units are not meant to limit our pursuit of knowledge but rather to guide us in our quest for an understanding of all things. We will be exploring comparative cultures, American culture and the myriad of micro cultures in which we find our selves enmeshed. The units are:


Inequity

culture/ wealth/ education/ pollution/ access

Family

discipline/ dynamics/ love/ values/ roles

Institutions

media/ religion/ corporations/ government/ law

Prejudice

Gender/ Race/ age/ lifestyle/ genocide


Your Requirements:


Participate This class requires your presence. Participation in class discussion is expected and required. This class features a weekly Socratic Seminar. Students are required to contribute thoughts on the discussion and its connection with the concept currently being explored in the class. Sorry, shy folks. 100 points



Class Work 200 points



Movie Log Each unit you will have a list from which to choose a film to view outside of class. Substitutions to the list may be made but must be discussed before they are submitted. Due dates are as follows:

Oct. 27 Nov. 9 Dec.1 Dec. 15 25 points each/ 100 points



Family Comparison Project

You will compare and contrast your family to two fictional families of your choice. You will develop a creative project which analyzes each of the families. Due Nov. 16. 50 points



Debate You will select a topic and two partners with which to conduct a structured debate on a specific controversial topic to be arranged. Due 10/31. 50 points








Social Betterment Project

Do something to make the world a better place. Tell us about it. Mr. Parker will provide you with the forms you need to fill out in order to record your progress. The Deadlines are:

Form #1 Oct. 27

Form #2 Nov. 9

Form #3 Dec. 15 50 points each/ 150 points



Class Project

Yea, that's right. Our Sociology Class will take on some pressing issue and do what we can to address the problem. The project will be worth 50 points each.



Final Dec. 20 50 points



Homework

Nine assignments which go along with the Socratic Seminar. 10 points will be given for completing all nine of the assignments. 100 points

ournal

Daily we will be asked to write. The nature of the journal is to try and develop interest on your part and connections with the curriculum. 100 point
