DATES to EXPECT Progress Reports and Report Cards

Mr. Hirt at NMCHS Sign December, 2008

Dear North County Parents and Community,

The holidays are upon us! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We begin our three week Winter Break following our last day of Term 2 on Friday, December 19th. School will resume on Monday, January 12th at 10:30 AM with the start of Term 3. On this Late Start Day, busses will pick up students 90 minutes later than usual. All students will report to Homeroom to pick up their Term 3 class schedules. Students will have brand new classes (except for A/B year long classes) to start 2009.

Some important school news to consider during this festive, yet often hectic, time of year:

- Dance Company and Dance II present their Fall show
December 11, 12 and 13th at 7:00 pm in the Forum. It will be a great show!

- Don’t miss the “Holiday Arts Faire” on Tuesday, December 16th in the Forum. The Visual and Performing Arts Department will showcase their talents beginning at 6:30 PM.

- Term 2 Final Exams will be administered from December 15th through December 19th.

- Term 2 grades are permanent semester grades. Encourage your student to study hard and complete all standards for all their classes.

PLEASE TRY TO ARRANGE FAMILY VACATIONS SO YOUR CHILD IS IN SCHOOL EVERY DAY. GRADES WILL CERTAINLY BE EFFECTED BY MISSED SCHOOL DAYS.

On behalf of all 120 North County Staff members, I wish you all a safe, happy and beautiful holiday season. Bless you all!

Sincerely,

Steven Hirt, Principal

FORMER NC PRINCIPAL TO RETIRE IN SEPTEMBER

Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Don Pedroni announced his retirement effective September 30, 2008 after 34 dedicated years of service.

Don began his career in 1974 at Lick High School in San Jose as a Science teacher. He coached a variety of sports and served as the Activities Director there until he accepted the same position at NMCHS in 1986. Don served two years as our school’s Activities Director before leaving to open the, then, new middle school at Moss Landing. Don returned to North County High in 1991 and served as the Assistant Principal until 1998. Don served five years as the Principal at NMCHS until 2003 when he was appointed to his current position.

I have worked closely with Don since 1986. I have always appreciated his warmth, intelligence and integrity. Our school and the North Monterey County Unified School District is a better place for students because of his superior work. While he will be greatly missed, I am happy for Don. He has certainly earned this opportunity to enjoy a wide array of new endeavors.

In addition, Roger has served as a mentor for many aspiring educators over the years.

This 1988 Condor of the Year accepted his award before an audience of 350 with his usual humility and understated gratitude.

NORTH COUNTY HIGH EARNS FULL 6 YEAR WASC TERM!!

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges announced that the Accrediting Commission of Schools granted a “full six-year term of accreditation with a midterm review, expiring on June 30, 2013. A WASC Visiting Committee studied the school’s action plan and carefully reviewed North County High during a late February, 2007 four day visit.

The full term earned by the school means that North Monterey County High School and its programs meet the rigorous standards outlined by WASC. Colleges, universities, the California State Department of Education and other national educational institutions recognize schools earning the WASC accreditation.
North Monterey County High School WASC Coordinator Whitney Grummon helped lead the staff, students and community on a two year self study process where the school’s strengths and growth needs were identified. A comprehensive action plan was created by the school’s WASC committee to address those growth needs in the coming years.

Principal Steve Hirt stated, “I am proud that North County High School has earned the full WASC term. The term is a testament to the high quality of the school’s instructional programs and the hard work put forth by every staff member. WASC Coordinator Whitney Grummon did terrific work in leading our school through the WASC process. I am anxious to start on our action plan and make our excellent school even better!”

2007 - 2008 Academic Reports

North County High Meets State and Federal Academic Standards

The state of California recently released the 2007 - 2008 Academic Progress Report that includes the state API (Academic Performance Index) and the federal AYP (Average Yearly Progress - "No Child Left Behind").

North Monterey County High School raised its API 13 points from 680 to 693, exceeding the state target of 6 points for the school. Growth was especially strong in the performances of Latino students (+30 points) and the school’s English Language Learners (+32). The school improved its API performance for the eighth time in ten years. The state measures each high school’s API based on student performance on the spring CST (STAR) exams in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies and on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in Language Arts and Math.

NMCHS also successfully met all 22 criteria related to the guidelines established by “No Child Left Behind” (AYP). The AYP factors in not only the above API scores but also the school’s graduation rate.

Overall, the data indicates that North Monterey County High School performed especially well on the CAHSEE. The Class of 2008 passed the CAHSEE at a rate exceeding 99%. Still, work needs to be done. This year (2008 -09), the school is focusing on improving instruction with a special emphasis on making sure all NMCHS courses are aligned with the state standards.

Sincerely,
Steve Hirt, Principal

NORTH COUNTY HIGH SHINES IN STATE 05-06 ACADEMIC REPORT

The State of California released the 2005 - 2006 APR report that includes the state API and the federal AYP (No Child Left Behind) on August 31, 2006.  NMCHS raised its API 24 points from 651 to 675!  The school's growth target was 7 points.  It marks the school's largest jump in the API since the accountability program was instituted several years ago.  The school also improved its performance for the seventh time in eight years.

North County High also met ALL federal and state goals; as a school and within all sub-groups. Of special note: only 29% of the high schools in California met all their goals this year!  While all sub groups showed improvement, the school's Hispanic/Latino and English Language Learner students showed the greatest improvement.

Student performances on the CST (STAR) tests and California High School Exit Exams are used to calculate each high school's acadmic progress. Four subject areas are tested in the STAR Exam: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.  The California High School Exit Exam tests students in Language Arts and Mathematics only.

Principal Steve Hirt praised the hard work of the staff and students. He said, "it was a team effort.  We still want to do our best to prepare our students for life after high school.  We're always looking at ways to improve our instruction and curriculum.  Again, I am very pleased with the results that show the school's headed in the right direction."

API AND AYP WEIGHTED CRITERIA

                             CST (STAR) ELA                           .30
                             CST (STAR) MATH                       .20
                             CST (STAR) SCIENCE                  .15

NORTH COUNTY MEETS 04-05 STATE, FEDERAL GOALS

North Monterey County High School met all state and federal educational goals the California State Department of Education announced in September.

Results from the annual California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Exam, the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and school graduation rates were used to determine the school’s academic progress.

NMCHS raised its state Academic Performance Index (API) 11 points from 640 in 2004 to 651 in 2005. The school met its API goal for the sixth time in the past seven years. The STAR Exam and the High School Exit Exam results were used by the state to calculate the school’s progress.

The six federal “No Child Left Behind Act” Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals were met by North County High. Students needed to score at proficient levels on the CAHSEE in sufficent numbers (over 20% in 2005) in Math and Language Arts to met the national target. NMCHS far exceeded those expectations. The school’s graduation rate and API score also met the federal guidlines.

I am pleased that we have met all state and federal goals for 2005. Our staff continues to put forth an extraordinary effort to ensure that all students learn. We still have students who are not performing as well as we’d like. We are working hard at identifying their needs and supporting their academic efforts. Nonetheless, we look forward to continued academic progress even as we celebrate this good news.

Sincerely,
Steve Hirt, Principal

NORTH COUNTY HIGH RECOGNIZED AT STATE SUPERINTENDENT’S SUMMIT IN SACRAMENTO

North Monterey County High School was recognized for its high graduation rate of Latino students during the “State Superintendent’s First Annual High School Summit” on October 25th, 2004 in Sacramento. Over three thousand educators from throughout the state, including NMCUSD Superintendent Keith Parkhurst, NMCHS Principal Steve Hirt and conference presenter and North County teacher Louann Baker, attended the two day conference under the leadership of State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell.

North County High was recognized during the opening session by the keynote speaker, Katy Haycock, a nationally known educational researcher.

In her address before the 3,000 attendees, Ms. Haycock highlighted successful high schools across the nation. She described the great work of selected schools in different areas of high school education. NMCHS was the first California high school she recognized in her address. She stated,

“Great things are happening in the state of California, too. North Monterey County High School has enjoyed great success in reaching students who traditionally struggle to graduate from high school. The percentage of Latinos who started at the school and actually graduated far surpasses the state average.”

Ms. Haycock went on to say that schools like NMCHS are models of how high schools can be successful and encouraged the conference participants to “look closely at the practices of these schools.”

ELOISE MILAM IS THE 2007 - 08 CONDOR OF THE YEAR!

North Monterey County High School awarded its most prestigious award, Condor of the Year, to the school’s Administrative Assistant Eloise Milam. Eloise was presented the award at the school’s final staff meeting on June 3rd. Eloise was selected by the school’s 23 person School Leadership Team for her great service to the students, staff and school.

Eloise has been at North County High since the school opened in 1978. She is one of three employees who has served at the school for 30 continuous years. Over the years, Eloise has served in many important positions in the school. She has been an attendance clerk, coordinator’s secretary, ASB finance clerk and, most recently, as the assistant principal/athletic secretary. Eloise became the school’s Administrative Assistant/Principal’s Secretary in the summer of 2007 upon the retirement of former Condor of the Year Carol Westfall.

Eloise jumped into her new position with great enthusiasm and initiative. Her work in this new position was magnificient from the very beginning of the year. She helped organize a new scheduling system for all freshmen. Ms. Milam trained and effectively managed all office staff to ensure that the school ran smoothly. She is the master multi-tasker who is able to work on several projects simultaneously. Eloise is a creative thinker and an excellent problem solver.

In accepting the Condor of the Year award, Eloise noted that her husband, David, and her late mother, Marie Rodriguez, were previous recipients of the award. It was a warm and touching moment. North Monterey County High School is proud of this true Condor; Eloise Milam: the 2007 - 2008 Condor of the Year!

HESIK AND TRUJILLO CONDOR ROOKIES OF THE YEAR

North County teachers Annameekee Hesik and Temo Trujillo were selected the 2007 - 08 Rookies of the Year for their superb contributions to NMCHS in their first year at the school. The School Leadership Team made the selection at the end of the school year.

Ms. Hesik joined NMCHS after teaching at North County Middle School for several years. In her first year at NC, Annameekee taught English to freshmen and sophomores. Her classroom was alive with excitement and great learning. Ms. Hesik’s lessons were carefully prepared and, combined with her dynamic classroom presence, her students enjoyed a great learning experience. In addition, Annameekee sponsored two vibrant and active clubs on campus.

Mr. Trujillo was the “Teacher of the Year” at Alisal High School before coming to North County. Temo, a 1998 graduate of North Monterey County High School, is a bright and resourceful Social Studies teacher. He brings a very strong depth of knowledge to all his subjects. Students are often working collaboratively in his classroom on creative projects related to the subject matter. Temo, the school record holder in the 800 meter run, is the Head Track and Field Coach for the Condors.

Congratulations to our two rising stars: Annameekee Hesik and Temo Trujillo!

  NORTH COUNTY MOURNS BRENDEN TSUKIMURA

North Monterey County High School mourns the loss of 2004 alum Brenden Tsukimura. Brenden was murdered in a failed robbery attempt at his place of employment on December 11th.

Brenden was a good student at NMCHS. He was a two sport athlete in football and track and field. He was always friendly and accepting of others. Brenden was a student at Monterey Peninsula College at the time of his death. Brenden has been remembered and honored by his many friends in several different ways this week.

This was a senseless and cowardly act that robbed our community of a good and decent young man. Brenden was an excellent citizen and a fine student who had many friends. He was a wonderful young man.

During the services at Cypress Community Church, at the burial immediately following at Monterey City Cemetary and at the Rememberance at North Monterey County High School Forum Saturday afternoon, over 500 of Brendan's friends and family honored him and comforted each other.
